Welcome to the official website of
Oberton String Octet
One of the most exciting and sought after young chamber music ensembles in Austria, the Oberton String Octet continues to impress audiences with their innovative programming and high level of technical brilliance.
Since their inception in 2015, the OSO has performed widely throughout Europe to critical acclaim. Highlights include performances at the 22nd Music Night of Sarajevo Festival, the Euro Chamber Festival in Gdansk (Poland), Carinthian Summer in Ossiach (Austria), Vienna Film Festival in Yekaterinburg (Russia), Kultur.LEBEN concert series in Bludenz (Austria), Jeunesse concert series in Vienna, as well as a collaborative concert with Markus Schirmer at MuTh concert hall in Vienna. Apart from this, the octet is also the Ensemble in Residence and makes regular appearances at the Steirisches Kammermusik Festival in their home region of Styria. Their recent debut at the Musikverein Graz was received with high praise after the ensemble delivered a high energy performance of works by Shostakovich, Raff and Enescu. Alongside these highlights, the octet also continues to perform various concerts at their training base of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, with several of their performances there having been broadcasted on Austrian national radio and TV over the years.
Not just an octet, the OSO recently expanded to create Oberton+, an ongoing collaborative project which has given rise to projects with soloists such as Markus Schirmer and Erich Oskar Huetter, with whom the octet will perform at various festivals during the upcoming seasons.
Made up of eight young musicians from all over the world, the ensemble finds great joy in the challenges and possibilities that come with being one of the more unusual formations for a chamber music ensemble. From standard works of the genre`s repertoire to original arrangements, to rarely performed works and world premieres, the ensemble continues to diversify the endless possibilites that eight string instruments have to offer.
As a culturally diverse ensemble, the young musicians are united by common goals: to produce the highest level of concerts on local and international stages, as well as to promote the concept of unity through music.
The Oberton String Octet continues to find new and innovative ways in which to bring people together through the power of music. As a result of this, the ensemble has started a project called ‘Homeland Melodies’, in which they arrange, record and perform popular and traditional melodies from around the world.
The music performed by Oberton String Octet demonstrated the nuances of different times and spaces, but overall it was about humanity and man's view of life
